Cupid

Oil on canvas (relined). 39 x 39 cm.

The present, square canvas depicts Cupid with a quiver of arrows before a blue roundel with black spandrels. An x-ray taken in the course of restoration to the painting in 2016 confirmed the piece to be a fragment of a larger work. A chemical analysis showed that the piece uses natural ultramarine pigment, which only wealthy painters at the time could afford. It also detected the use of a brown-tinted ground typical of the Italian school during this era. - The work is hand-inscribed to the reverse “Annibale Carracci”.

Provenance

Continental private ownership.
