Frans Francken the Younger and Abraham Govaerts were both born in Antwerp within a short time of each other. Govaerts specialised in landscapes with detailed depictions of nature. Francken - who was a member of a large family of artists - dedicated himself to figure painting, and his works in this genre are characterised by their elegance and refinement. The present work combines the talents of both painters to create an enchanting illustration of a motif from Greek mythology. It depicts Apollo and the nine muses in a lush Flemish forest.
