Soldiers in a Guardroom
Oil on panel. 39 x 62 cm.
The painter Jacob Duck from Utrecht was one of several Dutch artists specialising in the depiction of interior scenes with soldiers, the others being Pieter Codde, Anthonie Plamedesz., Willem Duyster, and Simon Kick. The motif was popular in the 1620s, following the end of the twelve years of peace between the northern and southern provinces of the Netherlands. Duck depicts this scene with few, perfectly placed brushstrokes in a heavily reduced, almost monochrome, colour palette.
