The Drinker (Allegory of Taste)

Oil on canvas (relined). 89.5 x 70 cm.

The young man in this work, who appears barely more than a boy, grins out at the beholder whilst he pours himself a glass from a - for him almost comically large - bottle of wine. The style of the figure, the use of light, and the colour palette of this work follow the tradition of Spanish “five senses” allegories. Jusepe de Ribera established the motif in Naples, from whence it arrived in Spain and was to exert a strong influence on artists such as Diego Velàzquez. It is highly likely that the present work also originates from a master of the “siglo de oro”, or golden age, of Spanish painting in the 17th century. Jacques Goudstikker, who once owned the painting, even published it as a work of Diego Velàzquez.
