Although so far no documentation of his exact date of birth has been discovered, researchers assume that Joost Cornelisz. Droochsloot was born in Utrecht in 1586. The artist is first recorded with his entry into the guild of Saint Luke in 1616. He married Agnietgen van Rijevelt two years later, but of the couple's thirteen children, only one, named Cornelis, was to survive into adulthood and also become a painter.
Droochsloot's œuvre mainly comprises village and city views. A broad, often diagonally placed, pathway framed by houses, churches, and city walls on either side generally dominates his compositions. Also characteristic for his works is the addition of diverse, rustic figures deriving from the Flemish tradition of Pieter Brueghel and David Vinckboons. Droochsloot's penchant for genre-esque narrative elements is particularly evident in the striking multitude of figures depicted in this work, which illustrates festivities and day to day life in a 17th century Dutch village with a realistic, if slightly exaggerated, clarity.
