Giovanni Ghisolfi

Two Architectural Capriccios with Ruins and Figures

Oil on canvas. 47.5 x 38 cm.

Giovanni Ghisolfi primarily painted his invented landscapes with ancient Roman temples and baths in sombre colours. The technique used for the figures inhabiting his fanciful worlds was influenced by the style of Salvator Rosa. Ghisolfi's architectural capriccios were highly valued both posthumously and throughout his lifetime, and they frequently inspired other painters. We would like to thank Prof. Francesco Petrucci for confirming the authenticity of this work after examination of HD photographs.

Certificate

Prof. Didier Bodart, Rome 1.3.1995 (attributed to Andrea Locatelli).
