Portrait of Hortense Mancini, Duchess Mazarin

Oil on canvas (relined). 74 x 61 cm.

Hortense Mancini was one of French Minister Jules Mazarin's seven nieces. He moved the girls from Italy to France in order to marry them off to members of the European aristocracy. Hortense married Armand de La Porte in 1661. He was one of the wealthiest men in France and later attained the title Duke of Mazarin. The Duchess of Mazarin was considered one of the most beautiful women of her era, but in later years led a somewhat unconventional lifestyle, becoming mistress to Duke Charles Emmanuel II of Savoy and King Charles II of England.
