Gerard Hoet

Landscape with a Mythological Scene

Oil on panel. 39.5 x 51.5 cm.
Signed to the stone in the lower right: G Hoet.

Gerard Hoet was educated by his father, the glass painter Moses Hoet as well as Warnard van Rijsen, a pupil of Cornelis van Poelenburgh. He fled to The Hague during the war in 1672, and later travelled to France, where he spent some time in Paris. After a further stay in Brussels, he finally settled in Utrecht, where he became a member of the Guild of St. Luke in 1697 and founded a drawing academy together with the painter Hendrik Schoock. Hoet returned to The Hague in 1715 and remained there until the end of his life. The present work is a typical example of the artist's œuvre. He frequently produced cabinet paintings with Arcadian landscapes, the majority of which he left undated.
