Arnold Boonen

Portrait of a Lady

Oil on canvas (relined). 47 x 36 cm.

In Amsterdam, Arnold Boonen was one of the most sought-after portraitists of his generation. He was first taught under Godefridus Schalcken in Dordrecht before undertaking a journey through Germany, but resided in Amsterdam as of 1696. Alongside the wealthy middle classes and aristocrats of Amsterdam, his patrons also included princes travelling through the city, such as Tsar Peter the Great and the Prussian crown prince.
Drs. Jan Six, Amsterdam will include this painting in his forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist.
