Carlo Bonavia

A Grand Tour through South Italy

Oil on canvas (relined). 50 x 76.5 cm.

Little biographical information is available on the artist Carlo Bonavia, who was active in Naples between 1751 and 1788. He began painting in the manner of Salvator Rosa but later came closer to the Rococo manner of Claude-Joseph Vernet (1715-1789), with whom his work has often been confused in the past, especially for its light and shadow effects and soft color palette.
Carlo Bonavia was the most internationally acclaimed Neapolitan landscape painter in the mid-18th century. His work attracted many Grand Tourists, who at times themselves became characters in his paintings, as in the present work.
