Jacobus Linthorst probably spent his entire life in Amsterdam, where he was accepted to the guild of St. Luke in 1789. His still lifes are characterised by their opulent compositions and bright colour palette. The liberal use of white frequently gives his motifs the appearance of shimmering transparency, and this effect is particularly evident in the grapes in this work.
