Girolamo Sellari, called da Carpi, attributed to

Roman Soldiers Arresting an Old Man

Grey ink. 19.5 x 28.5 cm.

Sir Sidney Colvin (1845-1927), who worked as "Keeper of Prints and Drawings" at the British Museum in London, attributed this drawing to Raphael in 1904. However, the manner in which the figures are spread out like a relief across the composition is far more reminiscent of the works of his pupil Giulio Romano, who in turn influenced the Ferrarese artist da Carpi.

Provenance

Conte Gelozzi (Gelosi), Turin (Lugt 545). - Private collection, Germany.
