This recently discovered drawing is an interesting new addition to the modest œuvre of the South German painter Michael Herr. He was born in Metzingen some time between 1605 and 1609 and educated by Georg Donauer in Stuttgart before moving to Nuremberg in 1610. He later travelled to Rome and Venice, where the works of his Italian contemporaries had a strong impact on him - especially those of the Carracci, Guido Reni, and Jacopo Palma Giovane. He returned to Nuremberg in either 1618 or 1619.
The present work is comparable to Herr's depiction of the Last Judgement in the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Tilman Falk has confirmed the attribution to Michael Herr.
