Cosme de Acuña

Study of a Male Head

Black chalk on tinted paper. 43 x 34 cm.
Framed under glass.
Signed lower left: CAcuña f..

Cosme de Acuña was an exceptionally talented Spanish Neoclassical painter. He was a pupil and later teacher at the Academia de San Fernando in Madrid, and later became the director of the Academia de San Carlos in Mexico during the 1790s. The artist later became mentally unstable and undertook numerous journeys throughout Europe. He appears to have died outside of Spain, as the place and time of his death were unknown to his family. This signed work is a fine example of Acuña's vigorous Neoclassical style.
Slightly worn, minor creases, a central horizontal fold.

Provenance

Private ownership, Germany.
