A Flemish carved wooden figure of the Virgin Enthroned, circa 1420/1430

Carved in the round. With partially overpainted former polychromy. A figure of the crowned Virgin seated on a throne handing an object (possibly a scroll) to the Christ Child, who grasps for the item whilst perching on His Mother’s right knee. The sculpture is characterised by the fine carving of the Madonna’s robes, in which the broad, curving folds of the cloak contrast with the cascade of drapery at Her side.
The Child's hands lacking. Minimal losses due to insect damage to plinth and to verso. Minor wear. Height 35 cm.
