Probably Lothringen, circa 1480/1490

A carved walnut Lamentation group, probably Lorraine, circa 1480/1490

The reverse flattened. Extensively preserved original polychromy, the faces presumably overpainted. A pierced high-relief depicting the Virgin Mary seated on stony ground, cradling the body of Her dead Son in her lap after the crucifixion. She is shown surrounded by figures of Mary Magdalene, St. John, Joseph of Arimathea – the donor of Christ’s grave – Nicodemus, and several mourning women. The finely carved work is thought to originate in Southern Lorraine on the border to Northern Burgundy.
Minimal wear. 53 x 53 x 12 cm.

Provenance
