North German, circa 1480/1490

A North German carved oak depiction of Christ crowned with Thorns, circa 1480/1490

Partially freestanding, the reverse flattened. With extensively overpainted former polychromy. The sloping plinth designed as a chequerboard tiled floor with angled lines to indicate perspective. The figure of Christ seated on a bench flanked by two mocking soldiers with the Crown of Thorns. The piece probably originated in Lübeck and is thought to have formed part of a Passion altarpiece.
The palm frond in Christ's hands and the sticks in the hands of the soldiers lacking. Minimal wear. 56 x 48 x 10 cm.
