Antwerp, circa 1500/1510

An Antwerp carved oak figure of an Apostle with an incense burner, circa 1500/1510

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. Extensive remains of presumably original polychromy. A standing figure of a young apostle holding an open incense burner in his left hand and grasping the handle with his right, whilst he attempts to light the incense by blowing on the glowing coals with bulging cheeks. The piece presumably originally formed part of a depiction of the death of the Virgin.
The tips of the feet and the plinth largely lacking. Wear with minor losses, especially to the right edge. Height 50 cm.

Provenance

Collection of Prof. Dr. Hans Waege, Belgium.
