Bavaria, circa 1510/1520
A Bavarian carved pinewood Anna Selbdritt group, circa 1510/1520
Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and deeply hollowed out. Partially overpainted older polychromy. The matronly figure of St. Anne sits enthroned upon a moulded bench, supporting the figure of her daughter Mary on one knee with er right hand, and the nude standing figure of Christ with her left. The clasped hands of Mary and Her Child accentuate the intimacy of the scene. The fine quality of the carving is particularly evident in the thin, curving seams of St. Anne’s cloak.
Minimal wear. Mounted to a wooden plinth, 75 x 52 x 30 cm (without plinth).
Collection of Prof. Dr. Hans Waege, Belgium.
