A Spanish carved wooden figure of St. Catherine, circa 1520/1530

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. With presumably original exposed older polychromy, some retouches to the face. A richly dressed standing figure of the holy martyr holding a crown in her left hand. Emperor Maxentius is depicted at feet, and she rests the sword with which he ordered her beheaded upon his face. Her attribute, the bladed wheel of her martyrdom, is depicted broken to the left above the head of Maxentius.
The right hand partially lacking. Losses due to insect damage to the edges. Wear with minor losses. Height 71 cm.
