A Northern Spanish carved wood depiction of the Virgin Enthroned, circa 1300

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and hollowed out. With partially overpainted older polychromy. A figure of the crowned Virgin seated on a throne, designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint. She holds Christ on her lap, who is shown blessing and holding a globe. The austerity of the composition is enlivened by the movement of the Child and the balanced drapery of Mary's robes.
The sides of the throne and the base are replacements. The back of the lower edge of the piece has horizontal wooden supports concealing the join between the original substance and the later base. With minimal wear. Height 82 cm (with base).
