Probably Bavaria, circa 1500

A presumably Bavarian carved wood relief of Christ crowned with Thorns, circa 1500

The reverse flattened and hollowed out in the lower section. With remains of presumably original polychromy. A figure of Christ clothed in a long robe, seated on a moulded stone bench and surrounded by three soldiers forcefully pushing the crown of thorns onto his head with sticks (now lacking). The finely wrought high-relief has been designed for a slightly lowered viewpoint, and the smooth edges indicate that it may originally have formed part of a hinged altarpiece.
Cracks to the plinth. Minimal wear. 64 x 44.5 x 10 cm.

Provenance

Formerly private ownership, Stuttgart.
