A carved oak figure of Saint Barbara, presumably Antwerp, circa 1520/1530

Carved in the round, the reverse only marginally flattened at the shoulders. Minimal remains of former polychromy. A standing, full-figure depiction of the Saint in balanced contrapposto holding an open book in her right hand, standing beside the tower by which she can be identified. Barbara is depicted with elongated proportions, dressed in a fashionable bonnet, a high-waisted, girded gown and a floor-length cloak whose crumpled folds contrast with the pleats of the dress.
With vertical hairline cracks. Losses to the back due to former insect damage. Wear with minor losses. Height 71 cm.
