Probably Netherlands, circa 1550

Two carved wooden support figures, probably Netherlandish, circa 1550

Carved partially in the round, the reverses flattened and hollowed out. Partially darkened to increase the sculptural effect. Two standing full-figure depictions of figures dressed in high-waisted robes with embellished borders designed for a frontal viewpoint. The two may have been designed as angels, and they are depicted facing each other as if to frame a central depiction or tabernacle.
Some fingers lost. Minimal wear. Mounted on wooden plinths. Height of each 87 cm (without plinths).

Provenance

Formerly collection of Antoine Van Hoe-Similon, Waterloo.
