William Clarkson Stanfield

Scene before a Gothic Church

Oil on canvas. 35.5 x 30 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: Clarkson Stanfield RA 1837.

Clarkson Stanfield discovered his love of painting whilst working as a sailor, later becoming a theatre set and seascape painter. He began expanding his repertoire to include landscape vedutas in the course of the 1830s. Stanfield collected the motifs for his paintings and prints during extensive journeys through Holland, Germany, Italy, and Spain. He published a book entitled "Sketches on the Moselle, the Rhine and the Meuse" with etchings from these regions in 1838. The present work is dated one year prior to the publication, and was probably made during a previous sojourn. It depicts a Gothic church and town square reminiscent of locations along the Rhine and Moselle rivers.
