Hellemans was considered one of the most talented landscape painters of his time in Belgium, exhibiting at the Brussels salon in 1815/1830. He was especially renowned for his wooded landscapes, which he occasionally populated with animals and usually based on the surroundings of Brussels and the Moselle region. This mid-format work displays a particularly atmospheric use of light and great attention to detail in the depiction of the leaves and rays of sunlight illuminating the irregular, lichen-covered surfaces of the tree trunks.
