Inscribed to the lower edge by an unknown hand: Navez provient de Portaels.
François-Joseph Navez was an important Belgian proponent of the Neoclassical style and Director of the Brussels Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts from 1835 to 1862. According to an inscription on the lower right of this drawing, it originates from the estate of his son-in-law and pupil, the painter Jean-François Portaels.
