Johann Philipp Heinel, who was highly valued for his finely painted portraits, landscapes, and genre paintings, resided between Munich and his home in Franconia. The identity of the young woman in this painting is unknown. She is depicted in an elegant white gown with a red shawl draped casually around her hips and her sun hat laid aside on a bench. Heinel places his subject in a panoramic landscape, probably representing Lake Starnberg with a view of the Alps.
