Julius Jacob the Elder

Albrecht Dürer and his Family

Oil on canvas. 56 x 45.5 cm.
Signed and dated lower left: I Iacob 1841.

Julius Jacob studied at the Königlich Preußische Akademie der Künste in his home town of Berlin, but enjoyed a glittering career in London and Paris. In Paris, he studied under Paul Delaroche and exhibited regularly at the Salon, and he received a number of important portrait commissions in London. In the present work, Jacob combines the topic of artistic creativity with genre elements. We see Albrecht Dürer standing at his door, lost in thought, apparently suffering from creative block. A female figure, possibly an allegory of painting, calls him back to his easel, whilst a group of small children play unnoticed at his feet.
