Inscribed to the reverse in an unknown hand: Heinrich Bürkel
Bürkel painted this motif of stone steps beneath trees leading up to a walled gate in a further unsigned oil sketch in private ownership, which H. P. Bühler / A. Krückl date to around 1830/1832 (Hans-Peter Bühler, Albrecht Krückl: Heinrich Bürkel, Munich 1989, p. 276, ill. 436). Bürkel arrived in Rome at the beginning of his career during the height of the so-called “Nerly Era”. Like the majority of his Italian landscape motifs, the present work is also unpopulated.
