Wilhelm von Lindenschmit d. J. - Young Woman in Profile
Wilhelm von Lindenschmit d. J.
Young Woman in Profile
Oil on paper, mounted on card. 41 x 32 cm.
The work is inscribed “Leibl 27.11.88” to the lower left, but since the handwriting does not correspond to that of Wilhelm Leibl, it can be considered to be a dedication.
In his expertise, Eberhard Ruhmer (Der Leibl-Kreis und die Reine Malerei, 1984) makes reference to the stylistic similarities between this piece and works by Wilhelm von Lindenschmit in the depot of the Neue Pinakothek in Munich. He also writes “There were diverse points of contact between Leibl and Lindenschmidt: Leibl was a great admirer of the then well-known, elder painter, and was inspired by him in many ways. There are works originating from Lindenschmit in which his joined monogram appears that even in reputable literature (Waldmann) are listed under Leibl, such as the “Head of an Old Woman” from 1865 in the Magdeburg Museum.”
