Andreas Achenbach

The Harbour at Emden on the Dollart

Oil on canvas. 107 x 136 cm.
Signed and dated lower left: A. Achenbach 90.

Andreas Achenbach is known to have been taught at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf at the age of twelve, but his attendance in the painting courses there is first documented for the winter semester of 1830/31. The artist achieved initial public recognition when he exhibited his work "Die alte Akademie in Düsseldorf" in the "Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westphalen" at age 16. However, his first breakthrough came at age 20, when Prince Frederick of Prussia purchased his work "Große Marine mit Leuchtturm" at an art exhibition in Cologne in 1836. This prominent patron brought the young artist into the focus of other important collectors.
Maritime themes like the sea, coastline, beaches, storms, and shipwrecks were among the most popular motifs of the Düsseldorf School throughout the 19th century, but no other painter was to study this motif so intently as Andreas Achenbach. This large-format work depicts the dual nature of seafaring - on the one hand providing a livelihood and indispensable sustenance, on the other concealing incalculable dangers.
