Andreas Achenbach - Storm at Ostende Harbour
Storm at Ostende Harbour
Oil on canvas (relined). 68.5 x 101 cm.
Signed and dated lower left: A. Achenbach 79.
The work of fishers and sailors occupies a central role in Andreas Achenbach's late œuvre. Risky manoeuvres in rough seas such as that depicted in the present work remain grounded in reality. The works frequently show curious onlookers on harbours and piers, and the close up way in which the dangerous scenes are depicted allow the viewers themselves to observe and take part in the chaotic events at sea and on land. The present work probably depicts the harbour at Ostende, which is also shown in Achenbach's large-format work “Leuchtturm bei Ostende" (Museum der Bildenden Künste in Leipzig), in which the lighthouse appears to scorn heavy weather, strong waves, and blustering winds.
