Abstrakte Komposition
1938

Tempera on card 44.7 x 34.5 cm Framed under glass. Signed and dated 'VACLAV VYTALACIL 1938' in pencil lower right. - Overall in fine condition. Firmly mounted on frame backing verso.

The American artist with Czech origins visited Paris, Prague and Munich during the 1920s where he studied, among others, under Hans Hofmann, and also assisted him as a teacher. Hofmann's painting was to have a lasting influence on him. In 1936, Vytlacil was co-founder of the "American Abstract Artists Group" (AAA) that considerably propagated and established the modernist abstract tendencies of Modern Art in the US. Vytlacil himself taught, among other places, in New York, at Black Mountain College and at the Art Students League. The present tempera belongs to the purely abstract compositions created by Vytlacil in the late 1930s.
