The Belgian expressionist Gustave Van de Woestyne belongs to the first group of artists with an inclination towards symbolism working in Sint-Martens-Latem in the South of Gent, together with George Minne and Valerius de Saedeleer, among others. Constant Permeke, Gustave and Leon de Smet as well as Frits van den Berghe then followed suit.
Van de Woestyne's works are stylistically characterised by the sleek planar aesthetics of New Objectivity. He equally devoted himself to still life and portrait painting in expressionistically heightened perspectives.
