A boxwood netsuke of a kappa inside a cucumber, by Hideyuki. 20th century

A kappa is trapped within a long cucumber looking out from an opening at the top, the feet visible through two holes in the lower part, suggesting extraordinarily long legs; the water sprite holds on to a vine, while a thin scrolling vine is inlaid in silver wire, the bumps of the prickly skin inlaid with gold, silver, bone, stone, and horn. Signed Hideyuki on a golden inlaid tablet and with engraved kaô. Together with the original wooden box, the inscription on the lid reading Ashinaga kappa, and signed Hideyuki on the inside of the lid with kaô and a stamp of the same kaô.

Sakurai Hideyuki was born 1941 in Tokyo. He worked in ivory and wood, which he embellished with various inlays.
