A Bhutanese black-ground thangka of Shri Devi. Early 19th century

The queen of war and the principle female wisdom protector of Tantric Buddhism, tib. pal den lha mo, riding on a mule across a sea of blood, holding in her four arms sword, skull cup, trident staff and ritual implement, surrounded by a retinue of fierce deities, with Chakrasamvara yab-yum and Vajradhara above. Inscriptions to the black-coloured reverse. Gouache and gold paint on cloth. Brocade mounting.
