Oil on canvas, mounted on panel. 75 x 58.5 cm.

Inscribed “AET 69” upper left, “Ao 1696” upper right, the sitter named below “Wolf v. B.”. Bearing the Böcklin von Böcklinsau family coat-of-arms with a leaping gold and silver ram on a red ground and a gold crowned ram to the helm. The Böcklin family became one of the most important Strasbourg patrician families in the 12th century. They gained a significant amount of land throughout the 13th century and were subsequently raised to knightly rank. This portrait, dated to 1696, depicts Wolf von Böcklin wearing a white ruff and gold medallion dedicated to his sovereign in Württemberg “EBERHARD LUD D[eo]G[ratia] DUX WURTEM ET TECK”.
