Jan Frans Douven, attributed to

Portrait of a Gentleman in a Breastplate

Oil on canvas (relined). 86.5 x 67 cm.

Hand-inscribed to the reverse (presumably copied from the original canvas): “JFDouven Pinxit / Ao 1720” (JFD monogrammed).
J. F. van Douven, one of the most important portrait painters of the late 17th and early 18th century, was court painter to Prince Elector Johann Wilhelm of Palatinate but also painted the portraits of Emperor Leopold I, the King and Queen of Denmark, the Duke of Modena, and the Prince Elector of Cologne Clemens August. The sitter of the present portrait, who is depicted on an oval panel, sumptuously dressed in a decorative breastplate, allonge wig, and a cloak embroidered in red and gold, has not yet been identified.
