Emanuel Handmann was taught, among others, by Jean Restout in Paris. He settled in Bern following a sojourn to Italy and there became the leading portrait painter among the city's patricians. The present work depicts Rosina von Lerber-Dachselhofer (1710-1751), dressed in a yellow lace-trimmed gown and a blue cloak. She married Franz Ludwig von Lerber in 1747, and the couple's coat-of-arms can be seen in the upper right.
