The Death of Verginia

Oil on canvas (relined). 44.5 x 36.5 cm.

In his work "Ab urbe condita", Livius records the (probably fictional) account of the story of Verginia, a figure from the early years of the Roman republic. According to this, the army officer Lucius Verginius is said to have stabbed his own daughter Verginia in order to protect her from violent assault by Appius Claudius, a member of the Decemviri who ruled over the Roman republic at that time.
