A tapestry with King Solomon's Idolatry from the Solomon series

Worked in wool and silk, lined. Depicting the King before an altar with one of his wives in the foreground and a temple scene in the background, presumably after Lucas van Leyden. The borders applied separately on all sides and horizontally trimmed. Soiled, the borders brittle. H 329, W 249 cm.
Southern Netherlands, attributed to Audenarde/Oudenaarde, mid- / 2nd half 16th C.

Other tapestries from this series are kept in the Château Azay-le-Rideau, Loire, in cat.: Tapisseries d´Audenarde du XVIe au XVIIIe siècle, Tielt 1999, p. 148 ff. The authors localise the origin of this border design to Brussels, where it was first carried out in around 1530 for Bernart van Orley (ibid. p. 148).
