Jacob Willemsz. Delff

Portrait of Pieter van der Burch

Oil on panel. 93.2 x 72.2 cm.
Dated and inscribed upper left: Ano.Dnis.1588/AEtatis 43.

The coat-of-arms and the inscription on this work allow us to identify its sitter as Pieter Pietsz. van der Burch. He originated from an old family in Delft and occupied a number of public offices in the town of Schiedam in Southern Holland, including councillor, treasurer, and mayor. Jacob Willemsz. Delff depicts van der Burch with a steady gaze, resting his right hand upon his hip. His clothing and overall demeanour radiate elegance and restraint. This corresponds to the conventions of official portraiture in the second half of the 17th century, which can be seen in other works by Delff, such as the portrait of Arend Martensz. Storm (Inv. no. PDS 20A-B; Museum Het Prinsenhof, Delft).
