Francesco Codino

Still Life with a Basket of Grapes, a Peach, and Birds

Oil on panel. 37.5 x 52.5 cm.

With a label inscribed Galerie Charpentier, Paris, 1951 to the reverse.
Francesco Codino was born Franz Godin in Frankfurt am Main. He adopted this Italianised version of his name at the latest in 1621 when he moved to Italy, where he is thought to have been active in Lombardy. Before this, Codino worked in the studios of the still life painters Isaak Soreau and Peter Binoit in Hanau, and their styles continued to influence the artist's works in Italy. The present panel derives much of its appeal from the contrast between the dark background and the few brightly lit still life elements on the grey stone slab in the foreground: red and white grapes in a basket, a single peach, and two birds.
Alberto Cottino in Turin has confirmed the attribution to Francesco Codino.

Provenance

Collection of Françoise et Jacques Subes, Château des Évêques, Saint-Pandelon, South of France.
