An old inscription to the back of the original canvas reads "Moritz graef van solmis"

This finely painted portrait of a young officer depicts Moritz zu Solms-Hungen (1622-1678), the son of Reinhart zu Solms-Braunfels. Moritz was the nephew of Amalia von Solms, wife of Frederik Hendrik of Orange-Nassau, Stadtholder of the Seven Provinces. He began his military career as a Cavalry Colonel in the army of the States General. This portrait later came into the possession of the Brederode family through Moritz' marriage to Florentina van Brederode.
