Matthieu van Plattenberg

Ships in Rough Seas

Oil on canvas (relined). 128 x 195 cm.

Inscribed to the original canvas “MS Montagna px No. 81” and with a fragment of old lining canvas inscribed "MS Montagna px No. 81" and "Unveräusserliches Eigentum des Gräflichen Schulenburgschen Hauses ...hlen, n/a W." glued to the reverse of the stretcher.

Matthieu van Plattenberg was born in Antwerp in 1607 but spent most of his career in Italy and France, where he died in 1660. Calling himself Monsù Montagna in Italy and Plattemontagne in France, van Plattenberg specialised in stormy seascapes. The present work is a characteristic example of his œuvre and can be relatively securely dated to his Italian period because it once belonged to the collection of the Dukes of Mantua.
