Lot 2083 D α

This vanitas still life combines several items commonly found in Jacques de Claeuw's works: musical instruments, a portrait print, a skull with a crown of wheat, some flowerheads, and a certificate with several seals. The brushwork and use of pronounced chiaroscuro are further identifying characteristics of this Dutch master. The depiction of the young man with the set of scales on the left is a less characteristic detail that provides the work with an unusual genre touch.
