Marco Ricci

Mountainous Landscape with two Monks and a Hermit

Tempera on goat parchment. 29.8 x 43.7 cm.
Framed under glass.

Marco Ricci received his primary artistic training under his uncle Sebastiano Ricci, and remained in contact with him throughout his life. Whilst Sebastiano concentrated on narrative and figural painting with religious and mythological scenes, Marco decided early to specialise in a genre which was poorly represented in Venice: Landscape painting. This work, depicting the landscape of the Alpine foothills, is a characteristic example of his unmistakable “Venetian” style. He utilises the flickering colours and compositional scheme based on diagonal lines typical of the “Settecento Veneziano”.
