Franconia 2nd half 15th century

A Franconian wooden relief of the Nativity, 2nd half 15th century

The reverse flattened. Partially overpainted older polychromy. The stable architecture frames a deeply carved opening within which the figures stand out in high relief. This finely carved, rustic depiction shows Mary, Joseph, and three angels grouped around the manger, with three shepherds approaching from the left and the ox and ass in the background watching over the Christmas scene.
A vertical crack to the upper left. Earlier insect damage and wear with losses to the edges. 49 x 58 x 10 cm.
