Franconia circa 1480/90
A Franconian carved wood figure of Anna Selbdritt, circa 1480/90
Carved three-quarters in the round, the sides of the throne separately attached, the reverse flattened and deeply hollowed out. Partially overpainted older polychromy. A devotional image designed for a frontal and slightly lower viewpoint, depicting the matronly Saint Anne holding the praying figure of her daughter Mary on her left knee and embracing the nude, seated Christ Child, who holds a eucharistic bunch of grapes, on her right. The work´s composition is dominated by the rich drapery of Saint Anne's robes, with robust vertical and compressed folds contrasting against the curvilinear pattern of the hems.
Minimal wear. Height 85 cm.
Private collection, Bavaria.
